At first, of course, we all thought that abortion shouldn't be legalized considering morality but, we forgot one thing, and that is that we were studying and discussing about laws, and laws do not take into consideration opinions or statements that do not have laws as sturdy basis, even for witty statements.
Our professor said that abortion can be authorized if it poses any harm, whether physical or mental, to the health of the mother. The act of abortion will then be allowed but only to chosen clinics that are licensed to operate with such procedures. The mother is given the choice whether she will or will not keep the fetus.
In the early stages of pregnancy, our professor said that the fetus, is not yet alive, considering the fetus without signs of life (heart pulse, reaction to stimuli, and movement) a foreign object inside the body of the mother.
Though in Roe v. Wade (1973), it was ruled that there is then a ban for abortion except when it is required to save the life of the mother. Though our professor hadn't finished and concluded whether the state can legalize abortion, I am assuming that the state may legalize abortion on the basis that it required to keep the mother from being harmed further by the effects of the pregnancy, in order to save the mother.
Aborting a fetus, which is lifeless, was just like removing the appendix, which is barely needed in the digestive system.
We kept on arguing that abortion shouldn't be legalized, both on the fact that we live on a Christian country and that we consider morality, but it served only as a reminder that I shouldn't argue furthermore if I do not have a strong basis for my statements.
Law may be harsh but it is the law.
