Are video games bad for us?

Do video games have positive and negative effects on a human person? Well, it depends but the answer is yes.

Negative? But mom I-
Let's face it, video games have bad effects on the human body, too.

Video games affect people in a negative way when they let themselves sink in as they play for too long that they wouldn't realize that they have been playing for more than enough! This may cause health problems as it might strain your eyes. Other than that, video games serve as a distraction from things that you should do. Ever experienced being tempted to play that video game you liked when the deadline of your project is just about tomorrow? I can still remember being scolded by my mom because I've been playing too much video games, and by my dad because he says that what I'm playing is too violent!

On an article I have read, video games are likely to make kids socially isolated which is true and it could lead them to confusing reality and fantasy. (Let's hope it doesn't get to that point!)

I told you Mom, video games are beneficial to my growt-

When we play video games, we just sit there and let our hands do the work for us as we use our fingers to press the buttons, move analog sticks with our thumbs, or move and click the mouse with our hands.

We might be physically inactive during the period of our playtime, but our brain does most of the workout! In short, video games train our brains! (unintentional rhymes)

According to an article from Raise Smart Kids, we develop many, yes, many mental skills as we play our favorite video games! These are:
  • Following instructions
  • Problem solving and logic - 'I knew that key'd fit in there!'
  • Hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skill!
  • Planning, resource management, and statistics
  • Multitasking towards multiple objectives
  • Quick thinking and analysis
  • Fast decision making
  • Strategy and anticipation
  • Memory and mapping
  • Pattern recognition
  • Perseverance - 'Have you played "hit it for 1 hour until it dies?" - oh I meant Monster Hunter 4'
  • Concentration
  • Inductive reasoning and hypothesis making
  • Reasoned judgement and taking risks
  • Teamwork and cooperation

People might think, 'meh' but playing video games could make you into a good leader. Playing video games could be really good to your health as it entertains you and trains your brain, but it could be bad too if you do not discipline yourself into taking breaks between sessions and playing only for a limited amount of time. Play all the video games, but don't forget that your health comes first!
